Flop talk costs Wallace $30,000

Posted by GameSetMatch on 30th November 2009

The NBA fined Celtics forward Rasheed Wallace $30,000 for publicly criticizing officials following Boston’s 116-103 victory over Toronto on Friday night.

Wallace told reporters after Sunday’s win over Miami that he plans to appeal the fine, but stopped himself from getting into more trouble, biting his tongue before elaborating on the subject.

“I’m definitely going to appeal that. I mean, what did I say wrong? You know, if they don’t want … No, I ain’t going to do that,” Wallace said to reporters before stopping in mid-sentence and smiling before departing.

After being whistled for a second-quarter technical foul against the Raptors, Wallace vented postgame about the call — dubbing Toronto’s Hedo Turkoglu a “flopper” — and saying the NBA product had been watered down by such calls.

Michael Ryder Delivers Goods For Bruins

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 30th November 2009

“Michael Ryder did not have a detailed plan of attack when he skated out for a shootout showdown with Ottawa Senators goalie Brian Elliott on Saturday night at TD Garden.

Ryder had watched as Elliott stoned Patrice Bergeron, Blake Wheeler and David Krejci in the first three rounds of the shootout. At the other end, Bruins goalie Tim Thomas, who’d missed the last six games with an upper-body injury, did an equally effective job on Ottawa’s Alex Kovalev, Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson.

Ryder simply let the puck be his guide as he cruised through the middle of the slot toward his rendezvous with Elliott. He made a quick read, applied a definitive fake and fired a wrist shot that beat Elliott to the glove side.

Thomas then stopped Mike Fisher on the final rush to seal a 4-3 victory and lift the Bruins past the Senators into first place in the Northeast Division.

“I wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” said Ryder. “I just wanted to try and get a high shot on him, and I beat him to the glove side.”

Celtics man up for win

Posted by GameSetMatch on 19th November 2009

This was a blowout that did not seem like a blowout. The score – the Celtics defeated the Golden State Warriors last night, 109-95 – indicates a comfortable margin of victory. But the Celtics never appeared to be completely certain of themselves, only briefly able to assert their dominance over a team that was concluding a five-game road trip with eight available players, including Raja Bell, who is scheduled for surgery on his left wrist.

“That team scares the hell out of you,’’ said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. “You want to sub your guys out with five minutes left and you’re worried about them making a 20-0 run in two seconds.’’

Rivers was only secure enough to remove his starters with 2:12 remaining in the game and, even then, he left in center Kendrick Perkins.

But the Celtics (9-3) put on enough of a defensive display to restore some self-confidence as they prepare for tomorrow’s game against Orlando.

Fire up the hot stove for another winter

Posted by GameSetMatch on 18th November 2009

RED SOX general manager Theo Epstein has no worries about the right side of the field. He knows who his right fielder will be next season. He knows who his second baseman will be next season. He knows, barring a dramatic trade for San Diego’s Adrian Gonzalez, who his first baseman will be next season.

He even knows who his catcher and backup catcher will be now that he’s picked up his option on Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek has exercised his own option to return.

But the entire left side of the field remains in flux. Shortstop Alex Gonzalez is gone, at least temporarily, and no one knows how far apart the Red Sox are from left fielder Jason Bay in their negotiations. On top of that, Mike Lowell isn’t getting any younger and might be the poster child for the dramatic home-road splits that Epstein blamed for his team’s early exit in the playoffs.

It’s been a busy start to the offseason for the Red Sox, and the fun has barely begun.

Porter’s mouth helped fuel Patriots

Posted by GameSetMatch on 9th November 2009

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said Monday that the team used Joey Porter’s trash talk as a spark leading up to Sunday’s 27-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

“It’s really motivating for our team throughout the course of the week and into the game when you hear that kind of stuff,” Brady said on his weekly appearance on the “Dennis & Callahan” show on Boston radio station WEEI. “I think the guys take it to heart and the coaches take it to heart.”

Last week, Porter said there was “no question” that Brady is getting favorable calls from officials this season. Brady missed most of the 2008 season with a knee injury suffered when he was hit by a player on the ground. In March, the NFL clarified a rule, making it a personal foul for a player on the ground to lunge and hit a quarterback below the knee unless he’s blocked or fouled. Some have referred to it as the “Brady Rule.”

Rondo inscrutable – and indispensable

Posted by GameSetMatch on 3rd November 2009

Rajon Rondo already had his ring and now he has his money. Would it be asking too much for him to just settle down now and play some basketball?

He should forget about Chris Paul. He should forget about Deron Williams. He should forget about Tony Parker. He should forget about Derrick Rose. He’s never going to be them and they’re never going to be him. One-upmanship is not the issue. Winning games is all that matters.

Barring some wild, unforeseen turn of events on Causeway Street, Rajon Rondo will be here for at least the next five years, which will encompass much of his athletic prime. He’ll be 28 when the contract expires. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Rasheed Wallace all will be gone. Paul Pierce? Maybe, maybe not. By that time Rondo will be the face of the franchise, the marquee player, the (presumably) perennial All-Star. He will, we must assume, no longer be getting caught up in extracurricular foolishness like he did Sunday night against the Hornets.
